Job Description:

University Book Store is seeking an experienced and dynamic Book Shop Manager to lead our trade books department that serves both the University of Washington and our growing neighborhood. This role requires a strong leader with exceptional financial acumen and a passion for the world of books and learning. As the Book Shop Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of our bookshop operations, driving strategic initiatives, fostering change, nurturing employee development, embracing technological advances, strengthening relationships within our campus and literary community, and ensuring the department's success within our organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement long-term strategies and mission for the books department in alignment with the University Book Store's overall mission and goals. This includes identifying growth opportunities, strengthening relationships within the University community, and staying abreast of industry trends. Ensure that every strategic decision aligns with our mission, and that mission is connected to the everyday work of bookshop employees.
  • Financial Management: Manage the financial performance of the books department, including budgeting, forecasting, and expense control. Analyze sales data and financial reports to optimize profitability and identify areas for improvement.  Ensure that financial decisions support our mission and contribute to the sustainability of the bookshop as a vital resource for our community.
  • Inventory Management: Oversee book buyers and inventory procurement, stocking, and merchandising processes to ensure a diverse and attractive selection of books and related gift merchandise. Monitor inventory levels, turnover rates, and product mix to meet customer demand and maximize sales.
  • Team Leadership: Recruit, train, and motivate a team of bookshop staff to deliver exceptional customer service and achieve departmental objectives. Foster a positive work environment that promotes collaboration, creativity, and continuous improvement.  Empower booksellers to connect with customers and fulfill our mission by sharing their passion for literature and learning. Provide ongoing support and guidance for employee development, including coaching, mentoring, and opportunities for skill enhancement.
  • Change Leadership: Drive change initiatives within the bookshop department to adapt to evolving market trends, customer preferences, and technological advancements. Champion a culture of innovation and adaptability, encouraging booksellers to embrace change as an opportunity for growth and improvement.
  • Customer Experience: Ensure that the bookshop provides an outstanding shopping experience for customers, with a focus on product knowledge and engagement. Implement strategies to enhance customer loyalty and satisfaction.
  • Community Engagement: Foster relationships with our community of readers within the campus community and beyond. Collaborate with UW student organizations, academic departments, and local institutions to organize events, book clubs, and author signings. In addition to the University, engage with platforms such as the Seattle Arts & Lectures (SAL) and Town Hall to expand our reach in the local literary community.
  • Vendor Relations: Cultivate strong relationships with publishers, distributors, online partners (bookshop.org and libro.fm), and other suppliers to negotiate favorable terms, secure exclusive offerings, and stay ahead of market trends. Evaluate vendor performance and make strategic decisions to optimize product assortment and pricing.
  • Marketing and Promotion: Collaborate with the marketing department to develop and execute promotional campaigns, compelling social media, events, and initiatives to drive foot traffic, increase sales, and enhance the bookshop's visibility on campus and beyond.

Qualifications:

  • Previous bookstore experience required; bookstore management/buying experience preferred.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to inspire, motivate, and develop a team.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to embrace and leverage technological advances to drive business success.
  • Passion for books, education, and lifelong learning.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work with diverse constituencies on campus.

Wage and Benefits:

The pay range for this full-time, salaried position is $75,000 - $80,000 per year.  Benefits include: medical, dental, life, and disability insurance; FSA; employer funded HRA; 9 paid holidays, 10 vacation days, and 10 sick days; 401k retirement plan; merchandise discount; employee assistance program; and a subsidized bus pass.
