About this position: The Marketing Director will be responsible for building and driving all aspects of communications and marketing for Strand Bookstore. They will work closely with the CEO, COO, and other departments to develop comprehensive marketing strategies to both promote and drive sales for the 98-year-old NYC institution. This individual will oversee the website, social media, email marketing, partnerships, subscription programs and work closely with creative to align in-store marketing with digital marketing.
We are in search of someone with a love and understanding of bookselling and the publishing industries, both big and small. An ideal candidate for this position is experienced in and up-to-date about news in these industries as well as has a working knowledge of Strand’s legacy and remains eager to grow and develop it further.
Responsibilities:

Develop a comprehensive communications strategy by working with necessary internal and external parties to increase awareness of The Strand, both locally and internationally, while also driving digital sales via strandbooks.com

Work directly with senior management to build, design and implement marketing campaigns

Oversees and manages a team of 2 assistants: delegating tasks, fostering development and managing performance of said assistants.

Oversee the creation of digital content, including website content, social media posts and email newsletters, among other digital marketing efforts

Enact marketing strategy by effectively managing internal marketing team

Conducts market research and analysis, and establishes data management and tracking systems to improve the company’s marketing efforts

Ensure strandbooks.com (The Strand’s primary e-commerce platform) is creatively and functionally aligned with the overall strategy by coordinating with the teams responsible for web development

Lead front end marketing efforts and develop new strategies for growth of ecommerce and brand awareness

Coordinate with stakeholders, and external partners, to promote success of activities and enhance the company’s presence online and in the local marketplace

Serves as public information contact, when appropriate

Oversee promotions and partnerships associated with Strand’s subscription services (The Book HookUp and Pick of the Month)

Manage development of in-store creative assets as outlined in the overall communications strategy

Develop monthly reports on performance analytics such as sales, social media engagement, and email KPIs

Proposes and manages marketing expenditures

Work with location scouts and production companies for on-location film and TV shoots
Ideal Qualifications:
-
3-5 years of Communications/Marketing experience
-
Significant experience managing a team and comfortable delegating tasks and responsibilities.

Demonstrates strong emotional intelligence in interactions, negotiations, and communications

Demonstrated record of success in development, alignment, and deployment of communications strategies

Strong understanding of Google Analytics

Proficiency in digital marketing platforms including Mailchimp

Knowledge of digital and social media trends
-
Experience managing or overseeing teams both internal and external

Ability to generate ideas, both independently and in collaboration with others, and see through ideas to completion

Experience with media relations and communicating with reporters

Excellent oral and written communications skills

Strong analytical, problem solving, and project management skills
