Overview:
We are looking for a motivated General Manager to lead the team at our City Point bookstore. The right bookseller will bring a high standard of excellence to customer engagement, team management, retail book sales, marketing, and merchandising. Our General managers are on the ground, customer-facing professionals, devoted to providing the best independent bookstore experience. We are looking for a leader who can encourage and inspire booksellers to share their passion and expertise through engaged interactions.

The General Manager will also be responsible for making sure the store environment reflects McNally Jackson’s principles of organization and aesthetics to provide the customer with our unique point of view and book browsing experience. We require our managers to be self starters who thrive in a fast paced retail environment. You should be comfortable navigating high volume traffic and pivoting through challenges. We are looking for a team player who is enthusiastic to collaborate with various centralized management departments and other General Managers across a multi-store platform to enhance overall sales and customer experience for the whole company. Great retail managers have their fingers on the pulse of what’s not working and come up with creative strategies to keep pushing forward. We need an intrepid personnel leader, someone who leads by example, with compassion and positive energy. Bookselling is such an inspired profession and attracts a dynamic demographic.

As General Manager, you will be charged with identifying and championing your staff’s individual strengths and helping work through deficiencies. You will need to be an excellent communicator. McNally Jackson has recently gone through a period of growth and continues to build systems needed to support our multiple locations. We are looking for individuals who can contribute to the development of these efficiencies and communicate them with their team through cohesive training and implementation.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develops personal connections with customers and fulfills all of the basic needs of day-to-day customer service, including gift wrapping, cash wrap, answering phones.
  • Manages a team of 12-25 booksellers and monitors payroll budget.
  • Collaborates with the Assistant Managers to ensure a designation of duties between the two roles.
  • Delegates tasks and goals with Assistant Manager(s) and booksellers and assists management in larger merchandising, organizational, and training initiatives.
  • Creates or oversees daily and weekly schedules according to the needs of management and assists with schedule concerns and staff callouts.
  • Oversees register opening and closing, performs weekly bank deposits, till replenishment, and works with our finance team to investigate any cash/register inconsistencies.
  • Organizes restocking, straightening displays, reorganizing back stock, stickering product, coding product department and category fields with booksellers.
  • In collaboration with marketing initiatives and Creative teams, creates organized, clean, and engaging displays and trains sales associates in display upkeep.
  • Physically moves product from backstock areas to the sales floor and vice/versa. Notifies appropriate receiving, accounting and management teams when a product arrives and needs attention.
  • Supervises store processing of web orders by delegating order assignments for staff and prepares orders to be shipped.
  • Insures supply orders and coordinates supply requests from the central warehouse.
  • Superficial cleaning and maintenance (i.e., taking out the trash, wiping down high touch surfaces, replacing light bulbs) and is responsible for general organization of shared spaces.
  • Coordinating store repairs with outside technicians.
  • Creating, training, and modeling standards of loss prevention and safety. Developing safety plans for store specific concerns and practicing de escalation.
  • Attends marketing meetings and bi-weekly management meetings and leadership training.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent work experience preferred
  • 5+ years of retail management experience required
  • Bookselling experience required
  • Confidence to work independently with minimal supervision; highly motivated, flexible and patient
  • Creative problem-solver with great attention to detail ● Outstanding leadership and communication skills; active listener
  • Strong analytical and thoughtful point of view
  • Exemplifies professional and ethical behaviors
  • Demonstrated merchandising skills; aesthetically inclined Updated: 3/2025
  • Flexible to work nights and weekends
  • Computer and IT competency a plus
  • Experience working with IBIDie a plus
  • Must love books
