Cool Idea: 48 Hour Read-a-Thon

2 Dandelions Bookshop in Brighton, Mich., hosted its fifth annual 48-hour Read-a-thon last weekend. From 5 p.m. Friday, March 6, until 5 p.m. Sunday, March 8, the bookstore had two volunteers sitting in chairs facing Main Street and silently reading their books. The event was originally 24 hours of reading, but grew to 36, and now to 48.

This year 2 Dandelions Bookshop added a fundraising component with a suggested $10 donation per person for the Livingston County Literacy Coalition. A neighboring business, Captain's on Main, hand-delivered drink orders during their business hours to any read-a-thon participants who ordered them.

"It's really been an exciting, community event. The sign up to participate was full in a matter of hours," the bookstore noted.

When it was over, 2 Dandelions posted photos, noting: "And that's a wrap! Both chairs stayed occupied with readers for the entire 48 hours.... A massive thank you to all who volunteered as well as to all who donated to the Livingston County Literacy Coalition! This was a super way to officially kick off reading month! Please tag any friends you see in these pics--everyone here deserves recognition for their participation!"
