Pamela MacColl, longtime head of publicity and external communications at Beacon Press, is retiring from the publisher after 27 years, effective at the end of August. She began her career at Scribner's when the publishing company was still located above the famed bookstore on Fifth Avenue. From there she went to New American Library and then to Random House, working with the long-time publicity director Carol Schneider and publicizing books by authors such as comedian Jonathan Winters, political activist Tom Hayden, and Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder.
MacColl joined Beacon Press in 1999, working with New York publishing alums Helene Atwan and Tom Hallock. She significantly increased coverage in major outlets, from book review and op-ed pages to broadcast media across the country, Beacon said. She worked with some of the press's key authors, including Marian Wright Edelman, Michael Patrick MacDonald, Robert Moses, Anita Hill, Lani Guiner, Cornel West, Mary Oliver, Octavia Butler, Bill Ayers, Rashid Khalidi, Reverand Dr. William Barber, Jeanne Theoharis, Judy Heumann, Danielle Ofri, and Ralph Eubanks. She has also played a vital role in stewarding works connected to the legacy of Dr. Viktor Frankl, and his foundational book, Man's Search for Meaning.
In recent years, Pamela has led her team through profound changes in the publishing and media industries. From shifts in technology and distribution to evolving reader expectations and market realities, she remained steadfast in her commitment to books, authors, and the social justice mission that has long defined Beacon Press.
