Before his event with illustrator Thien Pham for Mind vs. Machine (Roaring Brook) at Copperfield's Books in Petaluma, Calif., author Steve Sheinkin accepted a challenge to play a game of chess, in the store's front window, from eight-year-old Griffin. After fierce competition, they played to a draw. Griffin's mom can be seen watching the match in the reflection. Mind vs. Machine is a graphic novel about the 1996 chess battle between Garry Kasparov and IBM supercomputer Deep Blue.
